Baby's Got Rhythm
Incorporating Music Into Your Child's Life
By Melissa Granberry
Attending a music and movement class is one way to incorporate these activities into your child's life. Buchman teaches a class for preschoolers where she plays instruments, such as the piano and guitar, while singing and dancing with the children. The children participate in active listening, playing percussion instruments and finding the tempo by clapping and moving.
Many local universities have similar child development music classes. There are also national programs, such as Kindermusik and Gymboree Music, which introduce young children to the fun and joy of singing.
But how do we get our children to enjoy the classical music as much as they enjoy popular dance tunes? Involve them in active listening. While listening to classical music, see if your child can pick out the flute or violin. Also, have your child listen for a change in the music, such as the drums booming or the tempo quickening.
Folk songs are fun for children to sing and can teach them about different cultures and history (visit Smithsonian Folkways at www.si.edu/folkways
