When Kids Interrupt a
Romantic Moment

When the chance for passion finally presents itself, taking a quick moment to lock the door can be the difference between romance and embarrassment. If the safety and security of your children is an issue, making sure everyone is tucked safely in bed, locking your door for a short time and then reopening your bedroom door in case of a surprise midnight visitor offers everyone a comfortable solution.

Look at the options to create romantic privacy differently than you once did. Although weekend mornings spent snuggling may seem a distant memory, opting for weekend evenings after the kids are asleep or having your kids spend the evening at a friend's house helps preserve the intimacy that's undeniably important in adult relationships.

Making light of the situation is another option many parents find helpful. "We playfully announce, 'Close your eyes. I'm hugging your mom,'" says Heldman. "Usually the kids playfully balk and then wrangle in between us, but at least they see us demonstrate affection for each other as well as for them," adds his wife, Marsha.

Family dynamics and comfort levels vary greatly from household to household. Understanding that preserving your privacy and romantic life is just as important as protecting your child's best interest will help you strike a balance that comfortably suits your family.
