Helping Your Older Child Adjust to a New Sibling

Rothman has worked hard to make sure that Chelsea continues to feel special by saying something about her whenever people fuss over the baby. "When Stephanie does something new, like standing up or saying a word, I reminisce about when Chelsea was a baby," she says. "I am very careful to do so in a way that does not compare them in a competitive way."
I have found that the key to helping my son give up his "only child" status was to continue to strengthen his bond with me. Throughout the pregnancy we spent a lot of time looking at pregnancy magazines and Web sites that gave month-to-month updates on what was happening in utero. The pregnancy was like a family project.
Jonah was very happy with his little brother, but insecure about having his position in the family usurped. When he started to cry before going to school each day, I realized how strong his emotions were, and I encouraged him to voice his feelings. My husband and I even joined in the mourning for the good old days when there was no loud crying or smelly diapers.
