Cigarette Smoke is a Danger in the Air
What Are the Effects of Secondhand Smoke?
By Jacqueline Rupp
It's Time to Quit
The easiest way to avoid all the ill effects of secondhand smoke is not to smoke at all. It's as simple as that. But we are talking about quitting smoking, and there is usually nothing simple about it. Smokers are often frustrated, guilty, ashamed and discouraged about their addiction. But today there is even more help than ever, with new medications, online support communities and advocacy groups to help you in the process.
Give as much thought to quitting as you do to other important facets of your life. "Make a definite plan," says Vallone. She says there are 3 important steps to include in any quitting attempt:
- Give yourself five days to get ready, says Vallone. "Formulate creative ways to deal with the urge, mentally prepare, consult with a doctor and use over-the-counter or prescription medications designed to help you quit," she says.
- Vallone suggests setting up time for counseling. "This can be in-person, on the phone or even online, so you can easily fit it into your schedule," she says.
- Seek social support from friends and family members. Use your children to inspire you about the good reasons why you are quitting. Also, iscuss with them at an age-appropriate level your plan to quit smoking.
