Dr. Mindell says parents should watch for both nighttime sleep apnea symptoms such as snoring; breathing pauses during sleep; restless sleep; mouth breathing; and difficulty getting up in the morning, even after the proper amount of sleep. Daytime symptoms include hyperactivity, inattention, behavior problems and sleepiness.

To help avoid obesity and sleep disorders, Jacobs suggests regular bedtimes before 9 p.m. to make sure kids are getting enough Z's.

1. A hug and/or a kiss
2. Reading a book
3. Watching TV, a DVD or video
4. Getting tucked in
5. Talking with child

9. A glass of warm milk, water or other drink
10. Playing a video game
11. Listening to the radio or music
12. Taking a bath or shower or washing face
13. Brushing teeth
14. Brushing hair
