Pocahontas Costume

Pages:  1  2

Pocahontas is a great costume for girls who want to show their adventurous side! This costume is simple to make, and can be hand-stitched if you don't have a sewing machine.

Supplies:
  • 1 yard brown flannel fabric
  • Indian-print ribbon or rick-rack
  • Pinking shears
  • Fabric glue
  • Needle and brown thread
  • Small piece of Velcro
Instructions:

The Dress:
Measure your child around the waist and add about 4 inches. Then, measure your child from the shoulder down to about 3 inches below her knee. Write down these measurements. Fold the flannel fabric in half. Lay the fabric on the floor or on a large table. To make cutting the pattern out easier, draw the pattern onto a piece of heavy paper, then lay it on the fabric and lightly trace around the paper with a pencil. Cut the pattern with a slant from your child's right shoulder so that the dress is held on by one shoulder and sleeveless on the other side. (See photo.) Cut the bottom of the dress, leaving a point in the middle on both the front and the back. Stitch up both sides of the dress, leaving the top shoulder strap. Turn dress inside out. Sew or glue a piece of Velcro to both sides of the shoulder strap (you can get Velcro circles or squares that have tacky substance on the back – ask your fabric store clerk).
