Handling Jealousy Issues with In-home Daycares

By Jacqueline Bodnar

Two Sides to Every Coin
"There are pros and cons on every side," Dr. Kennedy-Moore says. "Your child may gain a special friend when you babysit another child. He or she could also learn important lessons about getting along with others. Same-age children are likely to have the most similar interests, but they could also have the greatest rivalry."

In addition, depending on the age gap, some children may take a nurturing and "in charge" type of role. On the other side, if a child is bossy or not interested in playing with another child, there could be problems. Older children can also end up teaching younger ones undesirable behaviors.

If you are going to bring other children into your home it's important to try to help your own children understand why you are doing so. This may help them feel a little better about sharing their space, toys and parent. It's also important to keep things in perspective and let your kids know they are still No. 1 with you. Be sure to set aside quality time with them every day to show them how special they are.

"Make sure [your] kids know that this is Mom's [or Dad's] job," Fitch says. "This helps get them things they need and want just the same as if Dad [or Mom] goes out and works. Make sure to prioritize their lives. Your kids come first. However, they have to respect that you are working and have a job to do."
