Crafty Ways to Learn About Money
By Kymberly Pratt
Here's what you do:
Mix 1 cup of flour into 1 cup of water until it is thin and slightly runny. Next, stir the mixture into 4 cups of boiling water. Simmer for about three minutes, then cool.
You will need one balloon for each piggy bank. Blow it up and carefully tie it off. Next, tear a good amount of strips of newspaper into pieces that are about 1 inch wide by 4 or 5 inches long. Dip each strip of newspaper in the "glue" and wrap it around the balloon. You want to make sure to have at least three layers of newspaper on the balloon.
Let the balloon dry for approximately two days. After it is dry, pop the balloon with a straight pin. Attach the legs and nose by separating five paper egg carton sections and using masking tape to attach them to the "pig's" body. Paint the pig using the pink paint. Let it dry overnight.
Using a craft knife (children should not do this), make a small hole at the tail end, insert the pipe cleaner and curl it into a spiral. Draw eyes using a marker (be sure to draw two nostrils on his nose!). Very carefully, cut a slot in the top with your craft knife (again, children should not do this step). Make sure to make it large enough for any coin to fit into.
