Folk songs are fun for children to sing and can teach them about different cultures and history (visit Smithsonian Folkways at www.si.edu/folkways for a comprehensive selection of folk music).

Listening to music does not have to be limited to the car stereo or home CD player. Attending a local concert or a friend's violin recital is a wonderful way for your child to listen to the music, see how the instruments are played and actually feel the beat vibrating through the air. "Once a child has learned to appreciate rhythm and distinguish sounds, learning to play an instrument is a logical and exciting next step," Buchman says.

Play Percussion Instruments
If your child also loves banging the drums (but it's driving you crazy!), try some "selective" banging, such as tapping out a tune and letting him repeat it. Another musical activity is helping your child find notes on a keyboard to simple songs, such as "Mary had a Little Lamb." There are all types of simple percussion instruments for preschoolers that you can find at toy stores or on the Internet.

Music brings joy and enrichment to all of our lives, whether it's by playing an instrument or remembering a favorite song from childhood. Even for the musically challenged, it's easy to incorporate singing and music into our homes for our children to enjoy. If 10 minutes can make us smarter, imagine what a lifetime of music can do for your child!
