The Signs and Symptoms of Fifth Disease

Fifth Disease-The Signs and SymptomsTreatment
At this time, there is no specific treatment available for fifth disease.

"Tylenol is given for the fever," says Dr. Reddy. "Since it is a viral infection, there is no antibiotic that will stop the infection. If you have an aplastic crisis, you may need blood transfusions. Babies whose mothers were infected while pregnant and develop hydrops can be helped with transfusions within the womb before birth."

Since so many infections occur without any of the symptoms, people are always going to be at risk for exposure. Good hand washing habits will reduce the risk of infection from hand to mouth. If you work with children or spend a lot of time around children, you are more likely to be exposed. The good news is that like many other viruses, once you have been infected one time, you are likely to be immune for life.

If you are a pregnant woman and think you may have been exposed to this disease, it is wise to talk to your obstetrician. An ultrasound may help detect any problems with the fetus on the chance that it may occur.

In most cases, the symptoms for this illness are mild enough that they do not require treatment.
