Donna's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

Austin, Schlitterbahn and Tom Petty

August 6, 2006

We've been pretty busy lately. We went to Austin. Had a great time. We got to do a Segway tour at Barton Creek, and it was the highlight of the trip. The kids loved it. Katie now wants one for her birthday. They're only $5,000, so I don't see why not... :-) We also swam a lot, went to Mt. Bonnell, ate at Plucker's (Michael's pick) twice, went to the Austin Children's Museum (it was closing in 45 minutes, so they let us in free) and walked around the UT campus. The kids loved Austin and want to go back.

We also went to Schlitterbahn Galveston last week. That was fun. We got there when it opened at 10 and stayed until almost 4. Then, we went to the seawall to have dinner at this authentic Mexican place called Gorditas, then walked on the beach a while. The funniest thing happened while we were looking for shells, and I swear I didn't do it on purpose. :-) I thought I saw a piece of one of the spiky, brown-and-white spotted shells you can buy in the souvenir shops. I yelled at Katie to come look. She bent down to pick it up and it squished. She yelled, "Mom, it's poop!" While she was freaking out, Michael and wet himself laughing. I honestly didn't know it was poop. We thought it was cool that we were at the beach during Shark Week. Am I only one who loves Shark Week (Ashlee used to call it "shark wing" when she was little)?? We've been staying up late all week because of it.

Last night, Michael and I went to the Tom Petty concert with MLB. We had so much fun. It's so fun watching Michael experience things like that for the first time. I had taken him to Aerosmith in February, but this one was so much different. It was at the Woodlands, and it was packed and loud. Michael was trying to act so grown up. It was very hot, so a lot of the guys were taking off their shirts. So, of course, Michael had to take his off. LOL It was funny because there's all these big guys and then this little 73-pound kid. I only saw one other kid there. I told Michael he's an old soul, which I think is fabulous. :-) It took forever to get out of there when it was over. At 1:30 a.m. he and MLB decided they were hungry, so we went to Denny's. It was almost 3 when we dropped Michael back at his dad's house.

Katie's getting excited for school to start. Her teacher called this evening to talk to her. She got Ms. Mazer, who is new to the school. She sounded very nice. Katie was saying "Yes, ma'am" on the phone with her. It was hard for me not to laugh. What false advertising that is. Ms. Mazer probably thinks she's this sweet little thing instead of this sassy Miss Thing with an attitude problem. :-)

Ashlee's been hanging out with Josh, Nick, Cara a lot. The four of them went to a movie Friday night and asked me to go with them. We saw John Tucker Must Die, which was pretty cute, and then went to Taco Cabana afterwards. We had a good time. Nick, Ashlee's boyfriend, is moving to Florida soon. She's a little upset, as am I. He's a really nice kid. Wouldn't let me pay for her movie ticket Friday night, then bought everyone Starbuck's. Calls me "Mom." :-)

We've been trying to get ready for back to school this weekend. They go back on Thursday. We have orientations and meet the teachers this week. Tomorrow Michael has to pick up his football gear. I don't know why, but I am not freaking out over him playing football. Maybe that will come later when I actually see him get tackled. I think Katie's going to play baseball while Michael sits out (he can't do football and baseball at the same time). I think she'll be really good at it.

Well, the kids are waiting for me so we can watch the documentary about giant squids. Shark Week is over, so we're taking what we can get. :-)

Until next time...
