Catching Up

Introduction

A lot has happened since I last updated. The kids are back in school – and have been for quite a while! Michael turned 13. Katie turned 9. I'm going to see how much I can actually remember:

We ended the summer with a trip to Kemah. We all bought all-day passes for the carnival. We had a good time. We ate at the Flying Dutchman, and then spent hours riding the rides. We also went to Stingray Reef and Katie swears that the stingray she named Butters was there. She could tell. Uh huh. :-)

School's been going OK for all of them. They've already gotten one report card. Michael and Katie got all As and Ashlee got As and two high Bs. Katie's been in trouble a little bit. Had a message on the answering machine from the bus driver about her acting up. Got a call from her teacher recently about her falling asleep in class and mocking the teacher. She also gets marks a lot for not turning in her homework. I actually have teacher conference tomorrow. It should be interesting. I've never dreaded a conference before, but I think this will be my first not-so-pleasant one. Richard is supposed to come too. I emailed him and told him about Kate's incidents and that I thought he should be involved.

Ashlee has been up to the same old thing. Hanging out with her friends. Nick moved to Florida. She's bummed about that. They had broken up before he left, but now my phone is full of "I love you, babe," "I miss you baby," texts. I think it's a good thing he's in Florida.

She also wants a job, but won't put the effort needed into finding one. Right now her dad is trying to get her on at CVS. He told her to call the manager, but she won't. Says she should call her. She'll be living at home until she's 30.

She was so funny last night. She walked in the living room carrying a box of Coco Krispies that had monster eye marshmallows in them for Halloween. Thought the kids would like that. She's standing there with the box and her hands on her hips. Very serious. She went on to tell me that the texture of the cereal and the soft marshmallows does not go together. It's just wrong. It confuses her mouth. (Yes, she said that.) "You'll get a bite of cereal, then a bite of the marshmallow, and it's like, what, what's wrong here. It's just not right. It confuses my mouth. Do not buy these again."

Michael has been playing football. He loves it. I really didn't think he would, but he's really enjoying it. He was playing wide receiver and safety. Now he's playing defensive end too. He's had a couple of real good tackles. Tore his elbow up pretty good, which he was real proud of. His last game was today, and he stayed to watch the other two games. He's also been helping out as water boy for the eighth grade games. He's going to try out for basketball in a couple of weeks.

For his birthday, he had three friends come over and watch the UT and Ohio game, then they spent the night. As for food for his party, all he requested was canned bean dip and Fritos, and meat. Yummy. Lately I can't fill the kid up. I have to take him something to eat at 2:30 before his football games so he can make it until dinnertime. I gave him money to buy dinner at the football game tonight, and he already told me he wants leftovers from dinner, and then will eat three to five bowls of cereal. Yes, really. Insane.

Michael was telling me about a science project he almost got a bad grade on. They had to create a planet, write a little about it, draw it and color it. He forgot to color it and remembered on the way to class. What did he do? He wrote a few lines on his description saying that his planet had a unique atmospheric condition that involved the gasses around it that made it colorless unless you looked at it from outer space. LOL Too funny. Then he went on to tell me that the teacher CANNOT mark off for it, even if she knows that's why he did it. "She just can't, Mom." The mind of a lawyer.

Katie is playing baseball. She's on the Astros. The season started out a little rocky, but I think she's enjoying it more now, though she's already told me that she doesn't want to play again. She wants to take gymnastics or dance next. Can't find her niche. Girl Scouts started back up. We are going to Blue Streak Stables the weekend after next for an overnight horse camp. Should be fun.

She's gotten a lot harder to handle lately too. She's going to be a tough one to raise. She's not into school like the other two were. She's more into the social aspect of it. She's also passing a lot of gas on purpose lately. (I hope this is embarrassing you right now as you read this as an adult. Maybe your fiancee is there, or your new boyfriend. Maybe we're reading this at your wedding.) She'll walk right by you and FART so incredibly loud that it makes you jump. She'll just giggle and keep on walking. Does it at the dinner table too. And she'll do it in front of anybody. Anybody. Maybe I need to send her to etiquette class.

I am always forgetting things at the store, so I put a shopping list on the refrigerator. Here's what I found when I grabbed it to go to the store the other day (I only wrote the top three things):

Mayonnaise
Butter
Cereal bars
Rice Krispie Treats Cereal (Ashee wrote this)
Mini pie crusts (Katie wrote this)
Strawberrys (Katie)
Canned (crossed out) bottled wip cream (Katie)
Baked potatoes (Ashlee)
Gatorade (Michael)
Bottled water (Michael)
Fritos (Michael)
Chili (Michael) Crossed out by Ashlee and written over it "EW!!!"
I want frickin' chili. (Michael) Crossed out by Ashlee and written over it "You're gay!"
OK, but I want frickin' chili (Michael) Crossed out and written over it "Gay" by Ashlee
CHILI (circled about 10 times)

I almost left it up there to see how the story would have progressed. All I NEEDED was mayo, butter and cereal bars. :-)

I know I am forgetting a ton of stuff. All the time I am thinking that I want to include something that happened or was said in this diary, then I forget about it. Need to start writing it down as soon as it happens. As my sister-in-law says, I have CRS. (Can't elaborate here.) ;-)

Until next time...
