April 16, 2003

Well today I will be turning in the evaluation reports to Austin's doctor. We had a teachers meeting about a week or so ago. This is where the worrying started. Last report card we (the teacher, Don, and I) talked about how well Austin was coming along. This time was much different. He is having alot of trouble with his attention span, interacting with kids, listening to someone when they speak to him, and the list goes on and on. He is excelling in the math area but the reading, writing, doing his work, following directions, listening, etc is lacking in a major way. So we wanted to talk with the doctor to see what we could do as parents to help him. I don't want him to struggle through school, and if we don't figure this problems out that is exactly what will happen. Now the doctor sent home evaluation questions for Don and I to fill out and a set for the teacher too. I have now recieved the teachers and ours is done so I will take them to the doctor today. Don and I had a long talk last night and though Dr. V is an awesome lady/doctor the way she approached this is not to our liking. After giving me the papers she mentioned that if the evaluation from us and Mrs. C warrants ADD then we will put him on meds. Ok, STOP!!! Don and I both talked about this and this is exactly what we DON'T want. Why is it that doctors go straight for the drugs instead of trying the other routes first. Meds, to me should be the last thing to think about. I don't think Austin is ADD or ADHD, and niether does Don. I have a cousin that had these exact problems and I think we may try what my Aunt and Uncle did. They talked with a specialist and was told to try getting the child involved in a sport or a karate class, something that teaches them discipline, focusing skills, etc. So I am going to mention this to Dr. V and let her know we want to try other routes before going to meds. I was told by the teacher that Austin is not always interacting with the other children well, some are not "accepting" him in the group. Ok, this is a red flag, cause this is not my son. Austin has always gotten along with other children, and anyone that has known him would agree. I don't know what is going on with him on this area, but I am going to find out! Don and I both feel we have not done enough or lack in some area, for Austin to be lacking in school. I feel like the blame lands on us as the parents. Don said he has been feeling the same way. What have we not done, or done? If it requires more time to focus on Austin, I will have to take a leave of absense from school. I don't like the idea of that but my son is more important than me getting a good job in the future. I just want answers now, not a week, or a month from now, NOW. Austin is a smart kid, he has the potential to excel in anything he applies himself too, we just need to find out how to get him to focus on this and apply it to school and home.
