Donna's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 8, 2004

The kids had a nice Christmas. Ashlee was thrilled with her cell phone. Michael loved all the Playstation 2 games and books that he got. Katie thought her Hello Kitty CD player was awesome. Santa did good. Everyone was happy.

We finally made it to the butterfly museum. Katie thought they were “beautiful” and “cool.” Even Ashlee enjoyed herself. Afterwards we had a picnic in the park, and then the plan was to go to the zoo. The kids kept watching the paddleboats while we were eating and decided they would rather do that. Good choice. We had a really good time. Michael and Ashlee talked, laughed, giggled and got along the whole time we were on the lake. But as soon as we got back on dry land, the magic ended. Maybe we should live on a houseboat?

This Tuesday was the first Tuesday in well over a year – maybe close to a year and a half – that I actually cooked dinner. Yes, we have been eating at Jason’s Deli, or someplace else after baseball, etc., for that long. I am sad to report that Jason’s Deli has stopped kids-eat-free night. Cooking on Tuesday felt like going out in the front yard to go to the bathroom – it just wasn’t right. :-) Sandra agrees, so we’re going to start going someplace again next Tuesday. We think we’ll get adventurous, try new things. It’s a new year! And, anything for the kids.

The kids are finally back in school. Ashlee was excited to start the new semester because she’s in Home Economics now. She loves to cook. She made dessert for us out of a new cookbook she got for Christmas a couple nights ago. She made Baby Lava Cakes. She was so funny because she wouldn’t let anyone in the kitchen while she made them. They were individual chocolate cakes that had a melted chocolate center. She put each on a serving plate, then dusted them with powdered sugar (she emptied my salt shaker and filled it with sugar), then drizzled the plate around the cake with melted chocolate. Very Emeril. ;-) Do I smell a budding chef?

We saw Grandma Tootsie Sunday. She is doing pretty well. When I told her that Richard was with us, she looked up at him and laughed. Not sure why, but it was funny. She kept asking us if we needed anything and wanted to get up and cook. Sounds like the Tootsie I know.

Friday night Richard and I went out to dinner – alone. We went to a tapas bar in Rice Village called Mi Luna. So good! We drank sangria, ate incredible tapas, had dessert and port wine – just relaxed. We’ve decided we need to do that more often.

Until next time.
