Donna's Diary Entries

February 20, 2003

We had an awesome time in New Mexico!! We were at the Bell’s at 3:45 a.m. on Thursday, and we all pulled out right at 4. The kids were so good the whole way. Katie did throw up about two hours into the trip, but I managed to contain it so it didn’t get in the car. My kids just don’t throw up, so it was a surprise. She blamed it on the crackers she ate. It happened about five minutes after she started coloring in this psychedelic coloring book, so I think she got dizzy or something. Who knows??

I’m supposed to write a travel journal on the trip, so here are just the highlights…

On Friday, we put all the kids in ski school from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30. Keith, Fred and Richard skied while Sandra, Kim and I took a three-hour ski class, which really helped. I was not so sure about the whole thing for the first two hours or so, but once we got on the bunny slope, I did really well. By the end of the day, Richard thought I was doing well enough to hit a “real” slope. So me and Richard, Keith and Kim (Sandra wasn’t ready!) took a 15-minute ride on the ski lift to the top of this 12,000-foot mountain. Well, it took us almost an hour to get down. I did really well on some parts, but had a tough time on others. But it was fun … most of the time anyway. There were a few really steep slopes that scared me. I did find that I love to ski. It’s really fun.

The kids LOVED skiing too. Ashlee is a natural. While trying to make it down the big mountain, Sarah and Ashlee and their class came whizzing by, howling like wolves. And I mean skiing FAST! It looked like she had been doing it her whole life. You go, girl! Michael had a harder time, but did OK. Katie LOVED it! They got to ride the ski life up to the bunny slope. That night, we let the kids decorate Valentine cookies and I made chili.

On Saturday, we ended up putting Katie back in all-day ski school because she begged us to. How could we say no?? So her and Taylor were in school, the men took the older kids skiing all day, and Sandra, Kim and I drove to Taos to shop and have lunch. Taos is the cutest town! We had a great time.

On Sunday, we were supposed to go snowmobiling, but decided to just stay at the house and play in the snow. Fun! We took a ton of pictures, had snowball fights and sledded down the driveway. We hit the road about 11:00 a.m. and stopped in Cimarron, New Mexico for lunch, where we were lucky enough to find the neatest place – the St. James Hotel. It’s been on “Unsolved Mysteries,” the Travel Channel special this October on haunted hotels and other shows. Everyone, especially the kids, was fascinated by this place. What started out as a one-hour lunch turned into a three-hour adventure. :-) I took almost a whole roll of film so the kids could look for “spirits” in them. It was great seeing all of them so excited. They walked around the whole place discussing everything, taking pictures and even asking questions to the woman who worked there. (We weren’t home an hour on Monday night before Michael was on the Internet investigating it more.)

We stopped right outside of Lubbock, Texas and got a hotel room. After a quick breakfast, we drove home. The kids, again, were perfect the whole trip.

Ashlee said her stomach hurt on Monday when we got home. She ended up staying home from school on Tuesday (like she needed to miss another day!) because she said she threw up. Sue me, but I don’t believe her. She came into my room at 6:30 (when her alarm goes off) and calmly told me she had thrown up. I know how she is about that, and she would have been so upset. Anyway, she stayed home and got to watch me do laundry all day. :-) She was well enough that evening to go to Jason’s Deli.

Michael has his first baseball practice on Wednesday. Randy is on his team, which he is really excited about. They are the Dodgers. Go, Dodgers!

We had some bad news this week. Shannon, my best friend growing up’s mom, died of cancer. The funeral is tomorrow in Brenham. I also found out that Leona, her daughter, had a baby a few days ago. It’s scary how many people are dying from cancer.

Until next time.
