Donna's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

February 24, 2004

Time for a quick update. We’ve been really busy lately. The kids were out of school on President’s Day. We went to Cici’s for lunch, then went to see Barber Shop 2. I liked the first one, but this one was not that good. I don’t even think Ashlee liked it too much. Before we headed out, Katie cooked dinner for us. She picked a recipe out of a kid’s Mexican cookbook called Caldito (a meat and potato soup) that had to be made the day before. We decided to make it in the morning, so we cheated a bit. She was so excited. She did everything but chop the onions and potatoes. It was really good. Katie prays before she eats every meal, but since she cooked this meal, she made everyone else join in before we could eat. :-) She rattled off the prayer (you could tell she says the same one every time). The end part was telling God to take care of Grandpa Tootsie. I didn’t know that she was reminding God of that at each meal. Very sweet.

Katie sold Girl Scout cookies Sunday night at Wal-Mart. She was supposed to do the “first shift” which was an hour. We ended up staying the whole two hours because she loved it. She now wants to sign up for the other four booths her troop is doing. She knows how to work the crowd! Despite the rain, they were making a killing.

Ashlee cooked dinner the following night. She made Taco Stuffed Shells. They were jumbo shells stuffed with seasoned ground beef with salsa. Both my girls are definite starch and meat eaters. No veggie-heavy meals for them. Ashlee got to pick her electives for next year. She impressed Richard and I by putting so much thought into it. She even went to the library with us on Friday and checked out some algebra, chemistry and Spanish books so she can get a head start. She’s in Home Ec now and loves it. She really likes to sew, and the class is learning how to sew a pillow. She made a cloth rattle for Audrey last semester and did an awesome job on it. I can’t wait to see the pillow.

Michael’s baseball practice has started. I was so impressed by the improvement in his throwing this year. He’s so much stronger. During the practice Saturday, while he was up to bat, he pointed to the fence. I had no idea why until the first baseman laughed and said that Michael thinks he’s Barry Bonds. Michael just grinned and nodded. LOL He’s a trip.

The kids got their report cards Friday. All As for everyone – well, almost. Ashlee got one very high B, which is still excellent because she’s in accelerated classes.

On Valentine’s Day, Richard and I went out with Sandra and Fred. We met at their house at 6:00. We were about to leave when a limo pulled up. Fred and Richard surprised us by getting a driver for the evening. We went to Pappasitos for dinner (we ordered the “love feast” which had lobster tails, shrimp, fajitas, etc. -- yum), then to two different places for drinks afterwards – and I couldn’t tell you at all where I was. It was pretty nice having someone drive you around while you drank cocktails and ate chocolate-covered strawberries. :-) The next morning, Katie came downstairs and asked if we REALLY had a limo, because that’s what Ashlee had told her and she didn’t believe her. Her eyes got huge when I told her we had. We’re going to have to rent one soon for her. Maybe on her birthday. She’s always telling us that one day she’s going to buy one.

Saturday night Richard and I went to a surprise party for John’s 40th birthday. Terri did a Mardi Gras theme. We had a good time. On Sunday, we slept in, then went to El Jarrito for lunch, then went to some model homes. We found two more we really like. I am so torn between buying an older home first before building another one, or just having another built now. I can tell what way Richard is leaning, though we haven’t really looked at any older ones yet. He’ll vote for new. I am torn because I’d love to keep the kids in the same schools. I guess it’ll all work out the way it’s supposed to. We found one we really like, and Richard talked to the saleslady about adding an office and another full bath to one of the bedrooms for Ashlee. That is Ashlee’s biggest concern on every model home we look at. She does not want to share a bathroom – especially with her brother. LOL I really can’t blame her.

Michael's Destination Imagination tournament is Saturday. It looks like it's an all-day thing. Their instant challenge is at 1:00, then they do their skit at 4:00, then awards are at 6:30. Can you say "long day"?

Richard is leaving Thursday night for New Mexico. He’s going skiing with Randy, Fred and Keith. They’ll be gone until Monday or Tuesday, so the kids and I are on our own. Will we survive without him? Tune in next week to find out. ;-)

Until next time.
