November 1, 2002
I had lunch with Katie and Michael on Friday. I couldn’t have picked a better day to go. I was a couple minutes late to Katie’s lunch, so I missed going through the line with her. I decided to just sit with her and go ahead and hang around for Michael’s lunch and eat with him.
First off, I just love having lunch with them. Katie’s face lit up when she saw me. She immediately told her friends to scoot over so I could sit beside her, then she raised her hand to tell her teacher I was there. She kept rubbing my arm and putting her head on my shoulder. It was so sweet. I was sitting between her and Christopher (her love interest), and guess who was on the other side? Abby. :-) The kids just love when any mom comes to lunch. The big discussion was about celery (don’t ask!) and many of them suspected that Abby and Katie loved Christopher. Hmm. I think the secret is out!
After her lunch, I saw Nancy, the volunteer coordinator, in the hall so I stopped to talk to her. She told me that Ben, Michael’s friend in his class, had gotten his finger caught in the door while the class was switching rooms. Part of his finger came off and was stuck in the door. She said that a lot of the kids had seen and the class was very upset. Three girls had gone home, and they had the counselor come in and talk with them. She warned me that that’s probably all they’d talk about over lunch. I waited to Michael’s class outside the cafeteria. When his teacher saw me, she pulled me aside and told me again what had happened, and that Michael had been very quiet since it happened. She said I might need to talk with him.
When I found him in line he was SO happy to see me. We got our lunches, and I bought a few Nutty Bars for him to share with his friends. I was going to wait until we sat down to talk about Ben, but he blurted out, “I would have shared this with Ben but he got his finger cut off.” So much for the subtle conversation opener I had planned. The event had really shook him up. He told me he was gong to call Ben when he got home. I asked if he’d like to get Ben a gift. He loved that idea. So after lunch I went to the store and made a care package. I had so much fun. :-) I got a gift bag and a card, then walked around filling it up. We took it to him that evening.

I wrote the above about a week and a half ago. I planned to post it that day, but didn’t. Well, I’m gong to have to condense what happened since or this entry will be a mile long!
We went to the Winborn carnival the Saturday before last. It was pouring down rain, so it was held inside. We didn’t win a cake. That’s becoming a tradition of ours. :-) One funny thing happened that showed just how Michael thinks. Richard and Katie put their heads together and decided to lock Michael in “jail.” Once they’re in, they have to stay for five minutes or pay three tickets to get out. Well, Michael was in about a minute or so when he pulled out some tickets. I thought he had cracked and was paying to get out. But you know what he did? He paid some woman tickets to throw his dad in jail. Michael pointed him out, and she went over, grabbed his arm, and escorted him to jail. It was too funny. The next thing that happened was just as funny: While Richard was in jail it fell down … literally. It was closed the rest of the day.
I won’t even try to remember what happened during the week, so we’ll go directly to the next Saturday. We went to Rainforest Café for lunch with Donna, Rick and Kevin. We had a very nice time. Afterwards we bought Katie some white cowboy boots that are so cute, then all went to see Grandpa at the hospital. Michael went home with them and spent the night. Katie went to a Halloween party that evening at Justin’s house. She wore her Houston Texan cheerleader costume with her new boots. When I picked her up at 9, she was ready for bed! The next day, Donna and Rick brought Michael home and stayed to eat and watch the game. The Texans won!
I’m now volunteering at the school every Wednesday. Katie loves it because I have lunch with her.
Today is early dismissal. The kids just got home. This afternoon is the debut of Ashlee’s play. They’re first performance is at a Lutheran church in Cinco Ranch. After the play, we’re all going back to the Galleria. Richard and I had wanted to shop, but ran out of time, and when the kids found out we ate at The Cheesecake Factory without them, well, it wasn’t pretty. So, we’re going to hang out there tonight. Maybe we’ll even ice skate.
Until next time.
