Elisa's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

August 11, 2002

Hello and happy Sunday.

This entry will attempt to catch you up on the kids.

CJ, who we always call the inspiration for iParenting because it was during my pregnancy with him that we started Pregnancy Today magazine and PregnancyToday.com, is heading off to Kindergarten in September. WOW.

CJ is a very interesting and amazing child (aren't they all?). He has shown gifted tendencies since he was about 2, and when he was 3, he was tested to be at the memory level of an 8th grader and the vocabulary of a 4th grader. While it's wonderful to have these abilities, as with many gifted children, he has other issues.

His stem from sensory overload. Things like loud noise, certain textures, smells and tastes can be unsettling to him. The technical term is sensory integration. That said, he is a different child than he was at age 3. What used to upset him doesn't anymore. Three years of speech and occupational therapy have really helped him overcome a lot of his issues. He still has his challenges, but if you met him on the street you wouldn't know he had any issues.

That's one of the reasons I've been unable to keep the diary -- between school, appointments and work, I barely know what day it is!

We held CJ back a year from Kindergarten so he could "catch up" on his social development with his peers. It was a good decision, as now he is really ready to start school. He was bored with preschool last year, so we did a lot of supplemental stuff at home. He is reading, telling time, adding, etc. He craves learning. He has a wonderful imagination and loves to build with Legos, etc.

Cassie is our little architect. She is very analytical, smart and outgoing. However, she can be bossy and is definitely the more "dominant" twin, if you believe in that. She loves to dance! When she hears music, she just moves. At times she has surprised us by how good her "moves" are! Both girls have long hair they like to wear in ponytails.

Jules is our little artist. I hate to classify them, but in order to describe them to you, I will use the labels. She can focus on an art project for hours. She has amazing fine motor skills and loves working with paint, beads, scissors, glue, etc. She colors in the lines and is very intent on getting it right. She is very emotional and sensitive. With Cassie being more bossy, we have lots of crying from Jules, if Cassie takes something, or whatever. We have to police them often! They fight, but they also love each other dearly. If one is disciplined, the other will stick up for her. CJ will, too.

We often are asked if we have triplets. It's not that CJ looks like them (he doesn't -- he looks like Alvin while Cassie and Jules look more like me). It's that they are all similar in build/height (CJ is on the smaller side -- 40th to 50th percentile while Cass and Jules have always been in the 90th% even as preemies!). CJ is definitely bigger (taller and fuller), but it's not a drastic difference that you might expect. When they were little, we also used a triple stroller, which confused people.

That's all for now. I'm off to finish a profile of Pamela Anderson for Women's Health & Fitness magazine. I forgot to mention in my intro about the magazines we do now -- Pregnancy, Baby Years, Women's Health & Fitness, The Buyer's Guide and the upcoming European Homes & Gardens. Another reason I am crazy busy!

Take care and happy parenting!
