Introduction
I hope all of you are enjoying the Labor Day weekend with your families.
We just returned from Door County, Wis. and had a great time. The kids absolutely loved it there, and we visited several farms. They rode on a pony. I was really proud of CJ for getting up there and being first -- he had ridden a pony before, when he was 3, and never wanted to since then. This time, he just got up there and rode for about 15 minutes, really confident and happy. He has been so much better about things that used to throw him off -- such as wearing a helmet, motion he can't control, etc. This was a real milestone for him.
Jules hadn't wanted to ride the last couple of times we took the kids for pony rides, but this time she did, and she did a great job. The only thing was, the pony kept stopping, and at one point, it stopped so hard that it made her lurch forward. It was scary for all of us! So, she got down after that and then it was Cassie's turn.
Cassie, who is usually the one who loves riding, was a bit nervous this time. I think it was because the pony was quite big, and she saw Jules lurch forward. She only rode around once before wanting to get down. She is the most rugged of the three, I think. She loves bugs, the outdoors, etc. Not afraid of much.
They also got to feed baby pigs, goats and sheep -- milk from baby bottles as well as corn -- and hold baby kittens. The girls would not put the kittens down -- for about two hours, really. And CJ was chasing the pigs around.
We ate a lot, shopped a lot, took a boat ride, rode in a paddleboat and swam. The kids loved swimming and I think they are all ready for lessons.
Today we are hanging around the house getting ready for CJ's first day of kindergarten tomorrow. We got them all new backpacks with wheels and handles on them, so you can roll them if they are too heavy. They LOVE these backpacks and have been toting them around the house for the past couple of days.
I am feeling bittersweet about sending CJ off to kindergarten. In a way, I am really ready, since he technically should have gone last year. But I also feel a bit sad that life is changing to the extent that he will be gone for the majority of the day and others will have control of what he does and what he learns. I believe they will do a great job -- it's just a weird feeling to let go of your child like that and trust others to care for him the way you would. And of course, no one can do that!
I plan to spend as much time there as I can, when they allow it. They want the first month to be a period of adjustment before having parent helpers come in. But I will still be there at dropoffs and pickups, early as possible. CJ is excited and keeps asking me when school starts. I know he will enjoy it. It will be challenging in all the best ways.
The girls have a couple more weeks before their second year of preschool begins. They are really looking forward to it. They want to go to kindergarten, too, LOL! They are such big girls, always wanting to do what their brother does.
I'm also a bit freaked about this West Nile virus going around. Five people in our town have gotten it; two have died. We were outside for a couple minutes yesterday and Cassie got two bites on her eyebrow, and it immediately swelled up and is still red today. I really hope it is just a bite and nothing more. Doesn't it feel like there is always something new to worry about -- some new threat? Sigh.
Take good care of yourselves and your families. Until next time,
Elisa
