Is It Working?

Update on Chris

We had a doctor’s appointment last Thursday in which I explained my DEEP concern of Chris’s behavior the week before where he cut himself. I did tell the doctor that he had missed ONE dose of his medication when the incident happened. Other than that, he seemed to be doing WONDERFULLY in class. Even his teacher commented on his behavior change.

Since the doctor’s appointment, I have had numerous phone calls from the teacher telling me that Chris just has not been doing well, again. His meds have been the same; Same dose, same time of day…everything. I really didn’t know what to think. I asked her to just finish out the week and see what comes of it. Well, nothing changed. His behavior at home is still SO much better than before and we are not having nearly the amount of stress or problems as we were before the medication, but for some reason, he is just not doing very well in school. I explained to his teacher that we may still need to give this some time, but the stealing and lying persists. He has been very emotional and during class and his attention to task is still very poor.

Now, during the visit with his doctor last week, she did suggest that we see a Child Psychologist. Andrew agreed that this sounds like a good idea. We have NOT yet been able to get an appointment. I plan to call them on Monday and see about that. I really think he needs to be seen on a regular basis. Hand-in-hand with the medications, I am hoping that this may help our situation somewhat.

Update on Ben

In recent entries, I talked about Ben’s reading skills, or lack thereof. He is doing REALLY well now. It was almost an overnight change. One day, he is struggling with reading, the next…He is reading billboards, flyers, books, and anything he can get his hands on. I am very happy about this. He seems to be doing really well in school. He has a lot of friends, is very social, and loves being there. For this, I am very thankful. I have tried to make a more conscious effort to praise him in areas that seem to make him a little more uncomfortable than others, such as reading. I try to encourage him to read some of his books nightly to himself or to me while I am doing dishes or laundry. It does seem to help.

Some Firsts

This may seem very trivial, but I let Ben and Chris cross the street to go to our neighbor’s house, last week by themselves, for the very first time. We don’t live on a busy street, but cars do come fairly fast and I felt that it was better if they just didn’t do it at all. However, I did feel that they had reached a point where they needed to learn some responsibility. This was one of them. And so, I was standing on the porch and instructed them on how to look both ways, etc. They were so proud of themselves and felt a sense of accomplishment.

Well, I think that’s all for now. Until next time,

Heather, Ben, & Chris
