Heather's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

March 29, 2003

03/27/03

Unfortunately, I spent my evening in the ER. Guess who??? Yep! It was Chris. (At this point, you might want to read my diary entry dated 03/26/03 first and then read this.)

Today, Chris missed a dose of his medication. He was OK when I got home but progressively got worse through the evening. He became VERY angry with me after he knocked over a half empty can of diet pepsi
all over my floor in the bedroom, because I became a little upset and shooed him out of my room rather abruptly. Not 5 minutes later, Ben comes in saying that Chris's mouth was bleeding. Literally, it was
gushing blood. And Chris seemed calmer than calm. No crying, screaming, or complaining. He just stood there bleeding. I could
NOT for the life of me figure out where the blood was coming from. Chris had told me that he had a loose tooth, and I just thought maybe he had knocked it out prematurely. He rinsed out his mouth for
a good 2 minutes and it finally stopped. After examining his gums
and lips, I realized that there was a pretty good sized gash in his gums from the teeth down and back up on his lip. I asked him what happened and he became angry again and wouldn't talk. I FINALLY got the truth out: He had broken a piece of glass off of a picture frame which was a gift from his Nanny, with her and Papa's picture in it.
He told me that he "found" a piece of that glass and was using it as a toothpick. (OMG!) At this point, I nearly lost it. I called Andrew and talked to him. I then called the doctor and had her paged. She said that she wanted us to go to the ER just in case he needed sutures to close the wound up. I was MORE than happy to do that. I was NOT at ease after he said the word "glass!"

At the ER, we waited about 20 minutes, and the doctor examined him for all of 2. He said the wound was not big enough for stitches but that he did need to be on antibiotics for 10 days. He was glad that I
brought him in.

All in all, Andrew and I are VERY concerned about Chris's behavior. I mean is it normal for a child to grab a piece of glass and act like it's a toothpick knowing it will cut him????? He seemed to be in NO pain whatsoever, and that concerned me even more. (My brother, who is bipolar, had that same type of problem before he was put on meds. He basically felt no pain.) All evening long, Chris got more and more hyper and by the time we were in the ER exam room, he was pretty much bouncing off the walls. He really didn't seem to GET what had
happened to him, which was totally self inflicted and I was concerned about how obsessed he was with "cutting" stuff tonight. It was very weird.

Until Next Time,

Heather
