When I was a child, my dad used to read C. S. Lewis to me every night. Seriously. We started with “The Chronicles of Narnia” and then it led us to Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” series, which I don’t think I liked as well at such a young age. After a few years of reading novels and such on my own, I turned to Lewis’ book of poetry, which I loved, as well as many of his other works. This was something that was shared between my dad and I for as long as I can remember.
At one point after the boys were born, my dad made tapes of himself reading “The Chronicles of Narnia”. I don’t know if I ever played them for the boys to this very day. However, this weekend, I decided that it was time to start reading the Narnia Chronicles to them myself. I couldn’t see myself waiting any longer. On Saturday, I opened up “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” and told them that if they wanted to color, I would read them a story without pictures. “Without pictures???” they asked incredulously! I chuckled and began reading. Pretty soon, the boys were captivated. I was so excited. They were sharing an experience that I had always shared with my dad. It made me very happy.
We got to the 6th chapter I think, and even now as we speak, the boys are begging me to read more to them. Imagine that! I told Andrew that as soon as we are finished with the Narnia books, I will introduce them to Tolkien. I think I will start with the Hobbit because it really is a good place to start.
All of this led to an inspiration to visit my favorite used bookstore today. There I found a “Wind in the Willows” book with Rat and Mole and some interesting bedtime stories book for them. The boys were thrilled. I only hope that I can pass along the amazing love for books that I grew up with.
Until Next Time,
Heather, Ben, and Chris
