Heather's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

November 16, 2002

We had such a full day today. It was good to have some quality time with my boys. It has been a while since we have really planned a day of fun just for us!

First, we attended Austin’s birthday party (Christa’s son.) We really had a great time! The kids were happy to be with each other and were itching to see Austin’s new toys. Chris was convinced that they would tear into them right then and there and let HIM be the one to test them all out. “Ummm, no….Chris, those will be Austin’s new toys, not yours!” He wasn’t very satisfied with this answer, but after threatening him, he succeeded in being “good” at the party.

~ The Game ~

This evening, I took Ben and Chris to their first hockey game. (We have a minor league team here in Missouri, where we live, and I was given 3 tickets to their game tonight by one of the doctors that I have been working with in Orthopedics.) We had SUCH a BLAST!!! I myself had never been to a hockey game, either. So, this was a first for all of us. (Andrew did have to work tonight and missed it.) The boys and I really enjoyed commenting on the game to each other, trying to follow the puck, and yelling/screaming cheers for our team! Ben was especially intrigued by it all and always wanted to know what was going on. He kept talking about how he LOVED it, etc. Chris decided that he is going to be a hockey player when he grows up, but was thoroughly bored with the game overall. LOL I hope to be able to do more fun activities with them. It was such a great way to spend some time with them and have fun!

~ SCHOOL ~

Ben and Chris are doing pretty well in school. Ben has amazed me on a daily basis with his math and reading. At the first Parent/Teacher Conference, Ben’s teacher informed me that he was struggling with reading. I noticed that he had received a C on his report card. I was a little concerned. At this point in time, I have absolutely NO concerns! However, it seemed like overnight when he did begin to excel. One evening last week, Andrew and he sat down with a simple Bedtime Stories book, and Ben actually read the whole first chapter (about 10-15 pages) on his own!!!! He wasn’t doing that at the beginning of the year. Now, he is reading everything in sight! I am very proud of him. Not only that, but Chris is picking up on the things that Ben learns, so it’s a 2 for 1. Ben also seems to be excelling in math. He enjoys doing any homework that includes math in it, which seems to be on a weekly basis. Today, after the game, I took them to Krispy Kreme to get some donuts. I bought 1 dozen and Ben asked me how many were in the box. I told him that there were 12. He is quiet for a minute. He then says to me, “Mom, 8+4 is 12. That means 3 days.” I was like, “Huh??” (Imagine me, here, exhausted from the day, trying to figure out what the heck he is talking about.) Then he says to me, “There are enough donuts in that box for all 4 of us to have donuts for 3 days.” Now, I admit, I had to really think hard on this one for a minute. (Hey, he didn’t get the math skills from MY side of the family!) Then he says, “Well, 4+4+4=12. That means 3 days!” He was very proud of himself and so was I! I was also very impressed that he thought that one out.

Chris is doing ok in school, but I would like to save that subject for my next entry since this one is already pretty long. Thanks for joining us.

Until next time,

Heather, Ben, and Chris
