Heatherc's Diary Entries

March 25, 2004

I have acquired a new dog. For those of you who "know" me, you understand that this is wonderful news! LOL For those of you who don't, you need to know that I am a HUGE dog lover. Long story short...My grandmother became ill and while her caregivers were out of town, was sent to a nursing home. My grandmother has a Pomeranian of the sweetest nature. I was asked to take care of her while they were away until my grandmother was well enough to be released from the home she was taken to. Sadly, we ALL fell in love with this dog knowing that she was going to go back to my grandmother in a few weeks.

After two weeks or so, we received news that my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and it was severe. She's 85 and up until now has been fairly healthy. Anyway, we were told she would be in the nursing home for life and that the dog was ours if we wanted to keep her. Andrew agreed. Not even days after this news, the dog (whom we have lovingly named Ginger) broke her leg. Ok, we aren't talking a clean break here....This was a displaced, leg flapping in the wind, fracture. (Poor thing!) One HUGE vet bill later, she is ours and now we are broke! LOL

Anyway, the boys are in love with this dog and so am I. Andrew on the other hand is not too sure. She has a wonderful personality but has accidents quite a bit as she is small and has a tiny bladder. We both work a lot and are gone quite a lot so I have to figure out a solution. She has to keep this splint on for another 6 weeks at which time I hope to hear that it is fully healed. I can't afford to put her through surgery.

My grandmother is doing well and has adjusted to being in the nursing home. We see her from time to time and she does ask about her dog, although I don't have the heart to tell her she broke her leg. I'm not lying, I just think some things are better left alone.

Until next time,

Heather, Ben, and Chris
