Heatherc's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

May 3, 2004

For whatever reason, we never taught our kids to ride their bikes. There was always something keeping us from doing it….We were too tired, or the bikes had flats, or we didn’t have anywhere to do it, etc. All lame excuses, I know.

Well today, we were outside doing yard work and Ben yelled at me to come and see how he could ride our neighbor girl’s bike down the grassy hill beside the house. I finally agreed and went over to watch him. I couldn’t believe that he could actually do it! So Andrew came to watch and he was shocked. At that point we realized that the kids were ready to ride their bikes we just had not really allowed them to learn because we had been too lazy.

So we got the pump out and pumped up the bike tires and made sure everything was set. I made Ben find his helmet and then Andrew spent some time with each of them in the middle of the street and within a matter of 20 minutes BOTH kids were riding the bike on their own and well!!! We were shocked and excited. We realized that it was so much easier for them to transition from a 2-wheeled scooter to the bike and that is the reason it was so easy. I’m glad they had scooters first. It really helped a lot.

So that’s their milestone. They are 6 and 7, a little too old to JUST be learning to ride a bike but I’m glad they are finally there. They are so proud of themselves. It reminds me so much of being a kid to sit and watch them play. I love seeing them when they are happy. J

That’s all for now. Until next time,

Heather, Ben, and Chris
