Jenna's Diary Entries

April 16, 2002

Okay, so I took Kirk to the dentist yesterday. It was no big deal. It was time for his check-up and we knew we'd need to make an appointment to have a cavity filled. He was really brave. Let me rephrase that. He was really brave until the dentist said that he did not have A cavity. Kirk, in fact, has 4 cavities. We decided to have 2 of them filled then and two later. After Kirk's cleaning, we moved to another room and I gave him the news. He cried. Not pitching a fit crying. The kind of crying that says my dog just died. His little face was red and puffy. His eyes were full of tears. He cried for a good 15 minutes I know Kirk is getting big, but I do not hesitate to call his little as I tell this story because when you cry over the prospect of getting a filling you are little. I love it when Kirk is little. He's big entirely too often. So we're in the dentist's office, both of us laying on the chair talking quietly about how it's not going to be as bad as he thinks it will, when the doctor walks in. Kirk sucks it up. They do the swabby numbing stuff and then it is time for the. . .the . . .the shot! I laid over his lets to hold his hands and I watched them stick this needle into his gums, first the top and then the bottom. Kirk didn't even flinch. Victory! We had made it past the worst of it. The drilling and filling would be a breeze, or so I thought. Thirty minutes later the doctor came back to do the deed. I expected Kirk to be nervous, but he was numb and I knew it wouldn't hurt. Well, the drilling began and Kirk was doing okay. Then suddenly, he spazzed! He shot up in his seat, flung the rubber "pillow" out of his mouth, and yelled. The dentist was shocked, her assistant was shocked, and I, I was mad. I instinctively gave Kirk the You-could-have-hurt-yourself-or-someone-else-by-acting-that-way talk. The doctor just nodded and said "yah." She finished up the filling she's begun and I had to make an appointment with the specialist. Egads. In about a month we going to go back and do it all over again times 3. I didn't stay mad for long. In fact the lecture I gave got it all out of my system. He did get pet on all night for having such a bad time. I guess all in all he did pretty well.
