June's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

October 22, 1999

Last night I spent 2 hours at a Wal-Mart with three kids. We have to run as if we're in a marathon to find everything we are looking for before Devin decides he wants out of the stroller. The idea of being 7 months pregnant and chasing an 18-month-old who will always run in the direction opposite the one in which you need to go -- and the closer you get the faster he gets -- makes me panic. The option is a strapped-in child wailing and straining the straps to the brink of danger.

We were there to get my daughter a pair of pants. She has only one pair she will occasionally tolerate with a lot of wiggling and crying in order to attend gym at school. They now have a huge hole in them, so we had to get another pair. After trying everything we could find -- and they all were awful for one reason or another -- she shocked me by being willing to try overalls. She has hated jeans since she was 3 years old. She said she loved the overalls because they were baggy and didn't touch her skin ... and that the waist would not be tight at all.

She begged me to wake her before her father to surprise him. Then the wiggling started ... constant adjusting of the straps because they were not even, or the length was different.... After 20 minutes, she decides to find a skirt. I tell her, "If you don't wear the overalls today, I'm taking them back." She was going to be on an all-day, outdoor trip, and pants were essential. Finally, after an hour and a half, she shows her dad with great applause and praise.

The usual golden boy 5-year-old who usually has no problem dressing decides he hates what he is wearing and won't go to school. (It's picture day, and he is going on a trip too!) He also has a fit because he has to wear boots that he says are too small. At the mall last night he did not like any of the boots in the store. They all finally piled out the door, the 5-year-old crying, the 8-year-old looking great but a little hungry because she missed breakfast due to the length of the dressing episode. Let's not forget the 18-month-old crying on my hip ... he woke up with a fever. My husband and I blew a kiss to each other with an exhausted look and I closed the door. I'm so glad tomorrow is Saturday and we have nowhere we have to go!
