April 11, 2000
The rocket experiment went fantastic. It turns out that the ones fueled by
Alka Seltzer were more popular with the boys. I think it's due to the fact
that the "fuel" is pre measured and therefore the results are more
duplicatable. Not to say that they didn't like the baking soda batch, which
were messier and flew higher. Of course, yesterday my little scientist had
to experiment on his own. He put first two, then three and finally four
tablets in the canister to see how big a pop and how high it would go.
Friday night was opening night of the local NASCAR track. It looked like
rain, but since we had discount tickets and the Scouts were to conduct the
opening ceremonies we went. It never did rain there but we did wear our
winter jackets. One of the cars is painted just like John Andretti's Petty
Enterprises #43 for the season. Nicholas was convinced it's the real thing
and kept telling me, "Mom, Richard Petty is here, where's Kyle ?"
Saturday started off drizzly. Matt was to have two soccer games back to
back. By the end of the first, the team was soaked, so the second was
called off. The kids played great, I think it should be a good season for
them.
Both boys were to have birthday parties to attend Saturday afternoon. Nick,
however, was complaining of a sore throat. We juggled our plans around and
Mike took him to the pediatrician while I took Matt his friend's party, and
Sam went along for the ride. They came home with instructions to administer
three different medicines and to try to keep Nick and Sam apart. I give
Mike A LOT of credit for handling it ... it was great that I didn't have to
take Sam along and expose him to a room full of sick kids. Sam has been
cranky all week, I think (I hope) it's teething starting. He also
discovered his feet yesterday, probably because he was wearing his new
soft-soled sneakers which feature Dr. Seuss's "Sam I am!" character. He sat
in his car seat during soccer practice wiggling them and smiling, then did
a repeat performance at home for his daddy!
I was talking with the mom of one of Matthew's friends when she relayed
this story to me.
She'd stopped in to drop off invitations to her son's birthday party. The
kids were in the midst of free time when they can play or use the computer
station. Apparently all the other kids were playing individually or in
groups. The teacher pointed Matt out to her and said, "Check out that one."
Matthew was standing at the globe with a pencil and paper copying down
names of countries and oceans.
It's always nice to hear positive things from objective third parties in
reference to your kids. What really hit me about this story is the fact
that Matt is the youngest in his classroom. It really takes away any fears
of him not being able to keep up with the rest of the class. Also, I was
told recently he's the best reader in the class!
I almost forgot the other incident last week. The boys went with me to the
PTO meeting. There's supposed to be a sitter to watch any kids who come and
they usually play in the gym or if the weather's good, out on the
playground. Well, with the return of the cold weather they were inside. A
little girl took Nick's Hotwheels car and somehow in the process of trying
to get it back she threw it at Matt. It took a nice chunk out of his scalp
and he came running into the meeting room in tears with blood in his hair
and all over his hand. The PTO president and myself left the room to clean
him up. It actually stopped bleeding fairly quickly and didn't require
stitches but what really ticked me off is that the girl never even
apologized ... and her mother never even got up to see what had happened !
I really felt like chewing her out but restrained myself.
Well, until next week -- here's hoping that Spring returns in time for the
Passover and Easter celebrations!
Take Care!
Suzi
Well, I'm relieved last week is over! It was one of those ones where we ran
from activity to activity never getting a moment's rest. Soccer, Cub
Scouts, church, birthday parties and doctor's appointments, the whole week
was a blur!
