Expert Q&A

| By John Dorsey, M.D. Pediatrician | ||
My baby is 12 weeks old and has just cut two teeth. There are two more ready to come through, and he is in so much pain. Because he is so young, he can't hold a teether, and the gels are all for babies over 4 months. I have no idea how to soothe his gums, he is so uncomfortable. What do you suggest?

One can use the gel at this age, although I generally recommend nonpharmacological means. Consider wetting a washcloth and putting it in the freezer. In a short period of time it will freeze, and you can let the baby chew on it. At this age, he will still reflexively chew/suck on anything placed at his mouth. Tylenol drops may also help some.
