Expert Q&A

By Jenny Lewis, M.D.
Pediatrician

Our family's best friends are moving across the country. How can I help my kids cope?

One of the most important steps is to tell kids the truth and don't wait until the last minute. Telling a child a few weeks before lets them get involved in planning a goodbye party.

If the family will periodically return to the area, then set up a meeting time. If they have a fax, then the kids can send each other things. Set up a reminder system to call on birthdays, or send cards then and at Christmas. Periodic phone calls or e-mail are another way for kids to stay in touch – many 8-year-olds can use ichat, especially the new version from Apple that uses a camera."
