Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

My son's ears stick out much more than his peers. He started middle school this year, and some kids from a different elementary school have taken to calling him derogatory names based on the appearance of his ears. He has asked me about having them "fixed." I don't even know where to begin or if this is possible. Can you guide me?

Protruding ears or "tin ears" are an eternal source of subtle embarrassment for a youngster, especially girls. These feelings can border on self-esteem issues. Plastic surgeons can pin their ears back after the age of 5 with a simple surgical procedure. A consultation should be arranged to at least talk about it.
