Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

My daughter has developed body odor. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I am worried about other people making fun of her and hurting her feelings, too. How can I broach the fact that my daughter's sweat smells?

If your child has an offensive body odor, it is appropriate for the parent to gently speak with your child. Doing this in a non-confrontational, non accusatory fashion is good. Perhaps using a humorous story about your own hygiene, such as the time that you forgot to ..... and the (hopefully) funny consequences. Or perhaps there's been an interaction with another adult when your child and you realized that other person's hygiene was less than ideal.
