Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

I've noticed that my son, 8, sleeps with the covers completely over his head. I can't convince him to do otherwise. Is this hazardous to his breathing? I always read about babies and the possibility for suffocation. Does this hold true for my son's age?

It would be unlikely for an older child to suffocate himself with a blanket. Children and adults have their own sleeping preferences (or even quirks), most of which are normal.
