Expert Q&A

By Catrise Austin

I've seen plaque rinses and ant-cavity washes – some specifically marketed to kids – in the dental health section of my grocery store. Is it wise to use a product like this?

The active ingredient in these rinses is flouride. Flouride can help prevent cavities from forming or help remineralize teeth that are starting to decay. Early use or overuse of flouride can however be detrimental to your child's teeth. The ADA recommends that these products may cause damage/discoloration to a child's unerupted permanent teeth if used before the child turns age 6. Consult with your dentist before using these anti-cavity rinses. Also, don't believe the hype. Studies have found that some of these rinses are no more effective than rinsing with water!
