Expert Q&A

My daughter is 6 years old and has both adult top front teeth, however one of her baby teeth is still in behind them. It is hanging but not attached at all around the edge of the tooth. I can tell that there is something in the center connecting it to soft tissue. Is it the root that never dissolved and how bad is this?

This is a common scenario as new adult teeth erupt. Encourage her to wiggle and twist the primary tooth being shed. If helpful, get some numbing ointment, such as Orajel at the drugstore to apply around it a few minutes before wiggling. A little prize, and lots of praise, can provide some incentive. Talk about the much anticipated visit from the Tooth Fairy or take the tooth to proudly show to her pediatric dentist, who can help if you're unsuccessful by her next semi-annual preventive care visit.
