My 8-year-old son has ADD. What can you tell me about a syrup called Melotone?
There was not much information on Melotone. All I found was some information from the company that manufactures it. I found some reports from parents who had tried it and the reports were either very positive or very negative. I found an individual who claimed to have done a study on Melotone, but the study was not published anywhere. I was not able to find a single study in any medical journal on this product.
Melotone is marketed as a nutritional supplement. As far as legalities go, that means it has to contain the listed ingredients, but it does not have to be proven effective. Notice that all advertisements for Melotone say that it is designed to meet the "dietary needs" of children with ADHD. Melotone is a mixture of mostly B vitamins, some minerals and herbs. If your child takes a multivitamin, there is really no need for the excess vitamins in the Melotone. As for the herbs, I was unable to find a single reference recommending them for use in either ADD or ADHD. Since this product has not been proven effective and there are no studies on it, I would not use it unless your son's physician has some experience with it and has recommended it."
