Expert Q&A

What is the best over-the-counter medication to take for a sinus headache that's safe for children and adults?

It varies by person because some people can't take certain medications. For someone with a sinus headache who does not have ulcers or high blood pressure, Advil Cold & Sinus or Motrin Cold & Sinus for adults and Advil Cold or Motrin Cold for children. Both formulations contain ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory medication that provides pain relief) and pseudoephedrine (a decongestant). One can also get the same effect by taking plain ibuprofen and plain pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) together.

For an individual with ulcers or who is already taking an anti-inflammatory medication for another reason, he/she could take acetaminophen (Tylenol) and pseudoephedrine. Some individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure should avoid pseudoephedrine because it can raise blood pressure. Be sure to check with your health care provider to make sure these medications are safe for you."
