Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman

When should my daughter start wearing deodorant?

Deodorant/antiperspirant is appropriate whenever a child has body odor (malodor) which is unpleasant or perspiration causes clothing to be stained. Chronologic age is not the key, but rather "sweat gland" development, which is part of the puberty process. As you know, puberty occurs at an increasingly earlier age, this generation compared with previous generations, and girls tend to be earlier into puberty than boys.
