Expert Q&A

With so many problems between students in public schools, how do you think parents should plan to educate their children in the future? Home school? Private school? Online education? Or something else?

Wow! That is really a loaded question. There are so many questions I need answered in order to feel like I am giving you the best advice. But I will try.

First, because I have been a school teacher and a part of the education system for 10 years, I am not one to promote home schooling. I feel so much beyond academics is learned inside the classroom. For example, patience, tolerance, diversity, group-dynamics, cooperation, spirit, leadership, listening, brainstorming and group discussions are all invaluable aspects of classroom learning.

Second, as far as public versus private education goes, you need to weigh the pros and cons of your area schools. Visit your neighborhood public school, private schools, and /or magnet schools. ""Hearsay"" is important, but you also need to form your own opinion.

What are the principals like? Do they take time to meet you? What are the students like? Is the population homogeneous or diverse? How many children are there in a class? Do the teachers seem enthusiastic or burnt-out? What is the curriculum? If you wish, ask to look at test scores.

I suggest you take control and decide what is important to you and your family. It seems you will probably have to compromise in some way. For example, if you decide on private education, maybe add some park district sports programs or art classes. That way your child can meet other children in your community, hopefully of various socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. If you decide on public schooling, perhaps supplement with some type of computer or enrichment classes.

See what your child's needs are. Do you think he needs enrichment in some area? A more structured environment? Possibly some drama? Adding specific activities means your child can get individualized attention in an area s/he enjoys.

Overall, I believe the best way to educate our children for the future is to help them to love learning and cooperating with each other. It is up to us as parents to create this environment for them and help them grow!
